No News Season

Signing day passed.  Spring game done.  Bo Pelini's new contract signed.  Once the best of the graduating and leaving Huskers are drafted, the dead zone of news happens for about a month.  Last year, there was the rumor and questions surrounding the conference stability and what Nebraska was going to do in the wake turmoil.  Besides highlights like that, most months of May include plenty of question marks in titles and "what if" stories across the Husker media landscape.

The Ohio State concerns could have fueled the fire of Bo Pelini's potential move to his alma mater.  Fortunately, the recent signing of a contract extension alleviated the concerns many fans had about the coaching future of Nebraska.  At least in the near term, Jim Tressel has a job and Pelini's not going anywhere.

As the summer begins to roll in at the end of May and beginning of June, the "magazines" start to hit the news stands and bookstores.  Preseason predictions start hitting preseason.stassen.com.  Expectations for the season begin to build.  The expectations now are that the Huskers have a chance to compete right away in their new conference.

Rumors about which players are making impact on the practice field start to filter in.  Other than starting quarterback, it becomes clearer which players will hold onto their starting spots and which are losing ground to newcomers.  Sure, maybe Bo Pelini will jump out in June and decide that Brion Carnes is the go to player to lead this offense in the fall and Taylor Martinez is being converted to Running back.  The more likely story is that Martinez leads until we hear otherwise.  Maybe an expected third string running back or defensive lineman is impressing the opposing squad and someone will say so.

The beginning of the bad news season will be marked by injury or trouble outside of practice.  It can never be avoided, but it can always be minimized by having a team disciplined on and off the field.  The end of June and beginning of July should hopefully be quiet.  As August builds up the excitement, it could even be bigger this year with the possibility of no professional football to watch on Sundays.  The no news season could possibly roll into the bad news season for Nebraska as the bad news fairies hit the other Big Ten teams this year.

No News Season is well in progress.  Even this article is not the first “zero-information” article since the bowl game.  To have an article about not having anything to write about?  Getting desperate already?

Nothing desperate about this post.  As you can see by links in the article, the last few weeks have plenty of topics to discuss.  If you’ve been following BRN long, we have nicknames for different times of year, like “Bad News Season” and “Magazine Season” and “Way Too Early Predictions”, etc.  I’m proposing that the month of May be classified as “No News Season”.  Unless Bo Pelini decides to be candid, or Nebraska changes conference affiliation, or some player does something stupid, 90% of the days in May over the last few years are boring when it comes to Husker news.  We’ll be here for the 10% it’s interesting and the rest of the time when it’s boring too.

I can dig that Tom.  And as that old saying goes, “No news is good news.”  I think that I would much prefer not hearing anything in May because we certainly do not need any players doing stupid things such as DUI’s or heaven forbid, breaking a leg or what not….  So, here is to a ‘No News Season’ in the month of may!!!  Cheers!!  Go Big Red!!!
